2011 - Living Link

In 2011, the Andrew Mentis Committee selected Living Link as their beneficiary and have worked hard to raise the funds needed to rebuild and equip a computer centre for them. Living Link is a school and training facility for intellectually impaired young adults. The school trains students in life skills and places them in temporary work assignments, with a view to hopefully finding permanent employment opportunities to match their individual capabilities. Where permanent employment proves not to be possible, the students gain work experience and improved self esteem, as a result of the programme.

The expansion of the Living Link facilities to include an integrated computer centre that can train up to 20 individuals at any one time, doubles the number of potentially worthwhile individuals who can be placed into constructive working environments and allows these individuals to lead a more normal and valuable life.

The reconstruction and equipping of the computer centre was further aided by direct contributions of time and equipment by various individuals within Nomads and outside contacts. For the direct and indirect support of all the Nomads, the Committee and the Living Link are extremely grateful.

2010 - Bigshoes Foundation

The 2010 Andrew Mentis Committee selected Bigshoes as its charity of choice.

Bigshoes exists to protect the rights of vulnerable children through holistic health, treatment and family interventions so children can grow up to fill big shoes!! They are committed to improving the medical care of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) with special emphasis on those affected by HIV/AIDS.

Through our normal fundraising channels we managed to raise in the region of R240 000.00, a fantastic achievement given the current financial crisis. The funds were utilized to procure a Mazda vehicle as well as assist with buying computer wares and office equipment.

On behalf of the AMEF committee and Bigshoes we would like to thank each and every one of you, both corporate and individuals for your contributions to our efforts, your support is greatly appreciated.

Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund

In line with the laid down aims and objectives of our Club the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund was created to channel the funds generated for distribution to charitable causes and assist those persons, regardless of race, colour or creed, in a less fortunate position than ourselves.

The fund was started by Andrew Mentis, a Nomad Founder Member in 1967 in Gauteng and he still contributes personally to the fund every year.

Each member club forms an Andrew Mentis sub-committee, which is chaired by the Vice Captain and is specifically tasked to co-ordinate activities aimed at raising funds for the fund. Monies raised are donated to a pre-selected charity that operates within our own geographical area, in the form of tangible asset upon which the Nomads emblem is displayed. The culmination of activities where the handover to Charity takes place is the annual Andrew Mentis golf day which is also open to the public by invitation. This gives invited guests, including women and juniors an opportunity to experience the Nomadic camaraderie and purpose at its finest. Nationally, since inception, the Andrew Mentis Endowment Fund has raised and donated in excess of R 20 million to charities.

Getting involved in the annual Andrew Mentis drive for funds is a basic Nomadic responsibility. This involves entering the various draws at the monthly games, donating prizes won as well as sponsoring holes at the annual Andrew Mentis Day.
