Compliments of the season to all Nomads and may 2016 be a prosperous one. Even though the country may experience significant headwinds this year, myself and the committee will continue to try and make the Nomads experience an enjoyable and affordable one. Thankfully our budget is not priced in foreign currency, although those travelling to Botswana and Zimbabwe Nationals later in the year may need to make extra provision. The nominations for the committee have opened for 2016 and I trust that Barry will make his appointments with more consideration than those used in appointing our recent finance minister. On the topic of finance, please remember that your subs are due by the end of January.

Having returned from another December holiday on the Natal South Coast, which was spent relaxing and playing some golf, with what seemed to be the entire Gauteng committee, as well as several Gauteng Nomads. For those of you wishing to experience a 20 day Nationals, played over various courses, you are welcome to join us in 2016. Book early as places are limited. Thanks to both Doug Watson and John Brewin for arranging all the golf. I would be surprised to learn of another Club in SA where the Captain, Vice-Captain and JVC were all together on New Year’s eve.

For those of you that attended our Xmas Cup and 55th anniversary, I am sure that you will agree it was a massive success. To both Bev and Spero and all those who assisted on the day, once again a huge thanks for all the effort in making it a success. I had the privilege of playing with our National Chairman, Gary Rodwell, one of Nomads greatest ambassadors and both National and local sponsor, Antonio Rossetti as well as our National Co-ordinator Michael Payne. As a member of Randpark, it is always a pleasure to welcome guests to the Club and I am always confident that they will enjoy both the golf course and the facilities the Club has to offer. We had a massive turnout with 20 players in the morning and an afternoon field of 144. The dinner was well supported with almost 200 meals served that evening. My apologies to those that have complained about the noise and disruptions at prize-giving, we are aware of it and it is being addressed. Congratulations to Brian Burns who was awarded his 450 game badge. I did approach Brian to play in my fourball, but I think watching him arrive on the18th green with 3 gentlemen that he had proposed (Tony Luyt, Brian Bolton and Cyril Ferrar) was a memorable experience for all of us. I also had the pleasure of presenting Bev Du Toit with her 15 year award and Roy Mentis with his 30 year tie. Thanks to Roy who managed to not only have his Father Andrew attend the evening, but also to say a few words. I am sure we are all aware of what Andrew Mentis has contributed to Nomads over the 55 years. Finally, we welcome Dave Marsden to Gauteng.

See you at Wanderers

The matron, Sharon Flint of Prim-villa Retirement Home was on hand at Germiston to thank the Nomads personally for their generosity and the gift of the Sensory room and equipment that was donated to the home.   I would like to add my thanks to all of the Nomads for having made this possible.

The second of my chosen charities for the year 2015 is the Avril Elizabeth Home for the Mentally Disabled. The home has asked for the leaks to their Hydro-therapy Pool to be fixed and for the pool to be recoated. This will ensure that therapeutic benefits of the pool are once again available to the residents. Their second request was to provide Shade Gazeboes for the use of the residents, so that they may spend more time outdoors. This must have been a very welcome in our recent heat wave. A further project is the installation of lights, to light a path to the assembly point in case of emergency. This is a health and security concern as the residents are unaware of night time, they awake after the sun is up and are back in their rooms before it is dark and may panic if forced out of the home at night.

The committee has also given the go ahead to upgrade the owl enclosure at “Wild Life in Crisis” my third charity for the year. The current aviary is too small for the 21 plus Spotted Eagle Owls in it and so this is been enlarged. Wild Life in Crisis has been taking an overflow of injured birds from the Free Me Organisation in Bryanston, and requires help to transport the injured birds. We will try to help them in this regard.

Finally congratulations to the Gauteng Nomads on their 55th Anniversary this year may we have many more.

Barry Bruton

Dear Mr Bruton,

I trust this mail finds you well.

This has been a very exciting week for us at Avril as the very first of our Projects came to fruition when Solis Shade Netting installed and completed the Shade Netting yesterday.  Even our Residents are in awe of the ‘new’ area and came to call us to show and express their delight.

Herewith attached please find some images for your perusal.  It has given the Home a much-needed facelift of note and I for one, cannot help to find an excuse every now and then to go out and have a look at how it has completely changed the look of the area.

Thank you once again for sponsoring one of our most urgent requests.

We are looking forward to what is about to follow.

Please feel free to visit with us at any time to inspect the finished product.

Kind regards,

Salome Smith

As the 51st Gauteng Nomads Captain, it is my honour to welcome and host everybody at this 55th Anniversary game, on the newly revamped Firethorn Golf Course. All of us Randpark Nomads are hoping to one day do Golforama duties at an SA Open here at Firethorn. To our current National Chairman, Gary Rodwell and those members of the National Executive present, as well as our Honorary Life members, past National Chairmen, past and current Captain’s and members, visitors and guests, it is a privilege to have you all present at this milestone.

I have received apologies from both Brian Cusins (who is celebrating his 50th wedding anniversary today with Noreen) and Arthur Ferneyhough (who is unable to attend, but did confirm to me on the telephone, that he is proudly wearing his 55 year tie). It is also great to see – one of our Founder members, Andrew Mentis, two of our Honorary Life members, who are still playing every monthly game (Doug Watson and Alec Saunders), our past National Chairmen (Doug, Alec and Glen Dalton) and all the past Gauteng Captain’s, sixteen of whom are playing today. On behalf of Gauteng I would like to thank all the past Captain’s and committees for what they have contributed over the last five decades. A special thanks to our 55th co-ordinator, Spero Marinaki, for all his hard work in putting this event together. Thanks to all our National sponsors, in particular Antonio Rossetti from SAB, for all they contribute during the year, as well as our local sponsors, who continue to donate prizes and funds every month. Without sponsorship for an occasion like this it would not be possible and we have once again been fortunate to receive a substantial contribution from Joe De Klerk (Cellsure) for the suit covers. We were also fortunate to have Saul Van Greunen (Hyundai Cresta) donate funds towards the costs of the day. Last but certainly not least to Bev Du Toit who has done an exceptional amount of work in assisting Spero with all the arrangements for today. I trust that everybody will enjoy the day and join us this evening in celebrating this occasion.

Since my last insert, we sent a contingent of 23 players to the 3rd Swaziland Nationals. This is an exceptionally well organised tournament, played over two rounds at Royal Swazi. As a result of its affordability, proximity, quality of food and venue, condition of the golf course and the best positioned cowboy bar on our calendar, there is no problem getting entries to the tournament. It appears that our biggest problem in future will be deciding on the qualification criteria for entry. Congratulations to Theo Mason and Mervyn Lubbe on another memorable Nationals. It always seems that where a tournament is played at a venue which offers accommodation on the course, the enjoyment and camaraderie is more evident.

Our November game was played at Germiston with a field of 104. The Germiston game is usually played with either the rain falling or evidence of it having rained recently. This year was an exception and Johannesburg is in desperate need of some rain. Under the dry conditions the scores were good which were helped by excellent greens. Thanks to my playing fourball, Gavin Marshall (Vice-Captain), Andrew Souris (on receiving his 10 year tie) and Les Coetzee (who apologised on not being able to stay to receive his 20 year tie). Congratulation to Tyron Zaaiman who had the honour of collecting his 5 year tie and not too long after that the matchbox. Welcome to Grant Hawkins who was inducted that evening.

The 120th National Management Meeting was held in Cape Town on 7 November as part of the Western Province 50th Anniversary. I was unfortunately unable to attend the meeting but did fly in early Sunday morning to play in the game at Milnerton. Thanks to Spero for representing me at the meeting. By all accounts the meeting went well with not much to report back on. The two notable decisions were, to reduce the National Management Meetings to one per year and to scrap the qualification criteria of games played, for SA Nationals. Unfortunately for those who are reading this and have not entered for Knysna, entries have closed. We have 46 entries for our allotted 39 spots. According to the Gauteng members who attended the anniversary dinner it was a well organised and an enjoyable evening. The Milnerton golf course on the Sunday was in superb condition, with very little wind for Cape Town standards. Congratulations to Gavin Scott on a great anniversary.

Finally – as this is also our annual X-mas Cup one is reminded that the year is almost over and all that remains is to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year – travel safe and see a lot of you on the Natal South Coast. If not, see you all at Glenvista on Thursday 21 January 2016.

Graham Bishop

This is my sixth report as Vice-Captain already, so we are halfway through the year and it seems to me, that the year is speeding up, as it does in the silly season. The Andrew Mentis committee has been fund raising for about 10 months. The financial year end does not correspond to the term of my office and will close at the end December 2015. Many thanks to all the Gauteng Nomads, and all others who have contributed to the fund raising efforts this year.  As a consequence of this support we are very close to achieving  budget, so please support my last fund raising effort, the very popular Taylor-made Golf Bag draw. The draw will be done at the Xmas cup and to Tony Luyt, we have unbanned you for this one, good luck. 😉

The Ellis Park Rugby Day was the biggest fundraiser this year and I admit that I was initially apprehensive to take on such a massive event. There is a large amount of planning, effort and funds involved in this day. Without the assistance of Spero, Darren, Graham, Sean, the rest of my committee and all the others who helped out, it would have been a massive task. Many thanks to all involved. I am looking forward to helping Sean Ledden with his fund raising efforts next year and would like to take this opportunity to ask the members, especially the newer members, to step up to the plate and stand on the Andrew Mentis Committee.  The duties are not time consuming and it is very rewarding to see what is achieved with the funds at the various deserving charities.

A huge thank you to Antonio Rossetti for his continued support of Nomads and also to Solomon Mahlatsi from SAB for all his assistance. Solomon arrived at the venue on the Friday afternoon with a truck carrying all the tables, chairs, umbrellas, bar, ice and lots of drinks. Without the assistance of SAB this event is not a viable one, although beer consumption was down on a very cold Saturday, Glenbrynth Whisky, Brandy, Rum and coffee were very welcome.

The old Race Day is a thing of the past, as it lacked support and did not make a profit. What has not changed is that as part of our annual subs, each Nomad pays R200 towards the “Race Day Tickets”. This has now been changed to the Andrew Mentis Endowment tickets. This year we have decided to do away with the booklets and to rather allocate a random number to each Nomad who has paid. All those who have paid will automatically be entered into the draw, to be done at the Xmas cup. This new approach removes the cost of printing and avoids a situation where a paid member omits to complete and enter his booklet into the draw. This year there are two prizes, first prize will be a R10,0000.00  voucher for The Golfer’s Club and second prize (sponsored by Glen Dalton) is a  three night mid-week stay at his B& B (out of Season) in Knysna for 4 people. Only Gauteng Nomads qualify and you do not have to be present to win the prize.

One of my final duties to perform is to arrange the annual Captain’s dinner. The purpose of which is to thank Graham, as well as the twelve Captains from the clubs at which we play our monthly games. The committee have decided that, as opposed to having to round up the same old sixty faces and having to organize a speaker (at no cost), why not rather invite all the Captains to a true Nomad’s day of golf and evening entertainment. As a result, this year the Captains dinner will be held at the Xmas cup and all of this at our 55th Anniversary.

Ruimsig Match Report

Many thanks to Tony Shaw, Sean Johnson and Sheldon Botha who started at Ruimsig. The day ran smoothly with the field running initially around 10 minutes early and finishing off around 2 minutes behind. The conditions were clear and the course was in good condition, except for the greens having been treated for a poa annua problem, however still very playable.  There was 104 players with the average points for the day at 28 and only 3 guys got cut.

Significant Dates – December

There is only 1 significant birthday coming up in December, Garth Elliott turns 55. Congratulations to you Garth.

Only 2 tie awards in December, Roy Mentis receives his 30 year tie and Noreen Cusins hits her 30 year milestone, well done to both.

Not too many weddings in December, I guess everyone is focused on holidays at this time of year. Congratulations to Roz and Alec Lewis – Williams who celebrate their 40th anniversary and to Richard Isaac who celebrates his 35th Anniversary.

Upcoming Events

After a very busy Nomadic year the tour calendar has now come to an end, we had some fantastic tours this year culminating in the Swazi Nationals and WP anniversary, I would like to urge all nomads (new and old) to participate in next year’s tours. They are well worth the effort.

General

We had another fantastic Swazi Nationals, A memorable weekend with a fantastic cowboy bar, which was given full support by the Gauteng contingent. The course was challenging but very well maintained, and I am pleased to announce no pink cap for me this time. The last, but by no means least, big jump up for Gauteng for the year is our 55th/Christmas cup at Randpark which promises to be a memorable event.

I look forward to seeing you all there

Sean Ledden
