RAISING FUNDS FOR THE FURTHERANCE OF GOLF THROUGH GOLFORAMA
My how time flies, when you are having fun and enjoying time on the professional golf circuit as part of the Golforama team. It
seems just like the other day when I prepared my last report.
I am glad to report again that for the 12 months that have passed since my last report we have been able to provide 145 days of
Golforama duties totaling 2844 volunteer days over the last 12 months and in so doing, raising more than R1 600 000 which will
be applied to the Furtherance of Golf.
This, when compared to the previous year, shows a reduction of 15 less events, 400 less days worked and as a result R200 000 less
funds raised. The main reason for this is the challenge that the SST is experiencing to raise funds from sponsors and thus less TV
coverage and shorter events. Despite this through the work of the Golforama volunteers we were still able to meet our commit-
ment to the beneficiaries of Furtherance of Golf.
This remains a massive commitment from the Golforama team and in particular the huge support we have received from non-No-
mad volunteers particularly in the Gauteng areas, especially over the winter period. This has been rewarded with several volun-
teers now being inducted as non-playing Nomads. We hope to see more inductions in the next year.
So, I am glad to report that we can continue supporting the aims and objectives of Nomads, being to encourage and promote, fos-
ter and support the game of golf and in particular to provide a source of service as may be used for the benefit of golf in South-
ern Africa. The work of the Golforama team around the Country continues to make their contribution towards meeting this goal.
This report, as I did last year, is dedicated to those Nomads and volunteers, their family and friends who have once again given
freely of their time for Golforama duties around the country.
Highlights of the past year
The highlight from the overall review of the year, has been the relative ease that the coordinators have experienced to fill
their fields compared to previous years. There have been exceptions but looking back I can gladly report that that by us-
ing the WhatsApp groups, the fields have been well supported and in some cases several reserves have been on standby.
The Sunshine Tour and the DP World Tour remain committed to use Nomads as their main support partner for live scor-
ing services and TV spotting and a further 3-year agreement has been agreed to up until March 2027. The relevance of
this extension is that as Nomads we can continue to support our commitment to our Furtherance of Golf beneficiaries.
As part of our sponsorship with SAB/Ambev we were able to provide a further 50 jackets this year to those deserving
volunteers, to give them some protection through the winter events.
A new event has been added to our schedule for next year which is the African Amateur Open at Leopard Creek in Febru-
ary 2024, and we look forward to that event.
Challenges the Golforama team faced this year.
The ink had barely had time to dry after we appointed Platjie as the Highveld Coordinator, when he resigned as a Nomad and as
the Coordinator. This was a big loss to both Golforama and Nomads, but gladly I can report that the teams in the Gauteng area
rallied to support the gap left by Platjie. The challenge now remains to find a replacement, which will be done with the support of
the local captains and members of the national committee.
Changes within the Sunshine Tour administration meant that there was immediate pressure to produce budgets and invoices in a
much shorter timeframe than we had previously worked up to. We will continue to do our best to meet these timelines.
Succession planning for all the coordinators will remain on the agenda for the next year and again I strongly recommend to the
current coordinators to have their successor shadow them for the season ahead.
Yours in Nomads,
